News from Mentmore Country and Golf Club

Today we bid farewell to Shaun Bakker. Shaun joined Mentmore Golf & Country Club a little over a year ago as our Sales & Marketing Manager. He has been instrumental in the launch of the Mentmore website and the positive exposure of our club over the past 12 months in various media channels. In addition to this Shaun has been a key figure in our Management Team.

Shaun has been offered the position of General Manager at South Essex Golf Club which is part of the Crown Golf Group. I would like to congratulate Shaun on his appointment and wish him well in his new venture.

Regards

Mentmore Golf & Country Club hosted the first of two junior summer golf camps on the 3rd to the 5th August. The camps were well attended with over 30 local children enjoying all the golfing activities.

‘Golf Fever’ was successfully launched at Mentmore Golf & Country Club on the 3rd of August. The initiative, which gets its name from the well established ‘Football Fever’ summer camps, was a great success with over 30 young budding golfers taking to the facilities at Mentmore Golf & Country Club over the 3 days.

Stuart Stedman, founder of Football Fever, said: “I have been very pleased with the Golf this week; the children have really enjoyed it! Five parents I have spoken to directly have said how much fun the children have had! Indeed, when I left today one of the parents was enquiring about membership at Reception! I am looking forward to the Golf Fever camp at the end of the month.”

The Mentmore Golf & Country Club Ladies Section just keep producing the most amazing golfing results. Tuesday the 27th July proved to be a fantastic day for momentous golfing achievements at Mentmore Golf & Country Club as 2 lady members added their names to the record books.

Anne Bridges had reason to celebrate with a fantastic albatross on the par 5 17th hole on the Rothschild course paving her way to a fantastic gross score of 71. The albatross was not enough as we later realised that Anne had just posted a new course record on the Rothschild course since the nines swapped around this January!

Anne has had a fantastic season so far and narrowly lost the Senior Ladies Midlands tournament by 1 shot and was also a semi finalist in the ladies county championships.

Aldyth Gardner-Ball also had reason to celebrate as she enjoyed her first ever ‘Hole in one’ at Mentmore Golf and Country Club. Aldyth, who currently plays of a 24 handicap, has been a member at Mentmore for the past 14 years.

Aldyth, who was the past Lady Captain of the club in 2004, said: “I initially thought my ball had gone through the back of the green! After searching in the bunker I was delighted to eventually find my ball in the hole!”

The newly fledged cycling team at Mentmore Golf & Country Club are preparing for the challenge ahead.
We are taking part in this year’s “Extra Mile Challenge” which takes us through France, Belgium and Germany, with a scenic route taking in the peaks and dips of the Black Forest. Training is getting off to a wobbly start as we find bikes to fit the team members, and the reality of our commitment sets in – just 83 days to go and counting..........

Travel:
We cross the Channel by Eurotunnel on the afternoon of Thursday 23rd September and drive to our hotels in Namur, Belgium, approximately 3 hours by autoroute. The Challenge starts early on Friday 24th, continuing on the 25th and finishing on Sunday 26th when we will enjoy a special Gala Dinner to celebrate the end of the Challenge. The return home on the Monday takes approximately 6 hours to reach the Calais Eurotunnel terminal.

Local golfer Carl Duke put together two excellent rounds of golf to win the 11th leg of the Jamega Professional Tour at Mentmore this week and take home a cheque for £4000.

The first day on Mentmore’s Rothschild course was bright and sunny with light winds, so low scores were predicted, which were achieved by Ryan Massetti and David Ginn who both ended the day on 7 under par 65. However, on the second day, which was equally warm, the players had to contend with a strong breeze and Massetti’s and Ginn’s lead evaporated to leave them 5 and 4 under par respectively. Meanwhile, Neil Reilly stormed through the field scoring a brilliant 64 to set an impressive early target of 8 under par 136 for the rest to beat.

Weather certainly did not dampen the spirits of the Mentmore ladies as 115 lady golfers took to the fairways in the Lady Captain's day on Tuesday the 8th June.

The competition was played over 27 holes with a 18 hole Stableford competition in the morning followed by a fun 9 hole Texas scramble format in the afternoon.
The lady golfers got more than they bargained for on the day and enjoyed homemade cakes and Pimms at the halfway house and even had the presence of celebrity duo ‘Ant & Dec’ on the day.
